Funny. I grew up in a town which had something of a reputation of being a kind of 'hippy town' ... organic/health foods, art/music college, alternative therapys, great music scene, and in the time when i had moved away for years, because of it's reputation it just got worse ... more hippys, more 'green cafes' more health food shops, more spiritual/alternative stuff and people walking around in bare feet and white dreadlocks, tie die clothing ect... you get the picture. And every time i visit it's just frankly wierd and alien and i'm both amused and bemused by it. I call it a parody of it's former self.

Our movies are real, American movies are fantasy to keep the people happy. Refer to the Romans and The Games. I thought it rather arrogant to suggest that for John Malkovich to appear in a British film was beneath him. The reason was it was the only offer of work for some time. The USA film industry had abandoned actors in favour of the green screen. I refer back to The Games.

Please Please Me was number one in the UK charts that people actually paid attention to at the time; it was only number 2 in a fairly obscure chart that several years later morphed into the official BBC chart. At that point, it retrospectively became the yardstick by which singles in the early sixties were measured by.

Brilliant really enjoyed this video and you're own insight ! ❤ 🤘 British comedy in essence for me is the ability turn the mirror upon society and ones self and being able to laugh about how absurd our actions and behavior is due to environments created out of our control. It's why we connect to the labeled, the down trodden, Even if they don't have their day. We laugh at them but do so because we know they are trying to win in a situation, That won't ever give them anything. It's also that age old trait of never giving in, We as a nation have been know for.

When america was tearing itself apart during the civil war Britain was the undisputed and unchallenged world superpower and during the good years of economic growth of Victorian Britain there were more entrepreneurial patents for new inventions being filed in optimistic Birmingham England than the rest of the world put together - this is because of opportunity education investment and a home grown BRITISH “can do” attitude and confidence which we have since lost. At the same time 1860s Japan was considered by the British to be an almost medieval backward country. visiting japan today is like visiting the future. Britain maintained its optimistic “we are the best and can do anything” mentality until the meat grinding death fields of the First World War - we needed Americas help to end that war and we were in it for twice as long as the Americans were so we were twice as traumatised and twice as shell shocked. And that was the crossover - even though America was already richer than Britain by 1900 it didn’t matter - Britain was still top dog in the worlds psyche and that would have continued had the First World War never happened. To clear up this never ending fallacy. I’m a white Brit male and I see These two white British men over and over again… …they were a little brighter than their peers at some point and so they smug-face their way through the rest of their lives believing they are much more intelligent than they actually are and that they know it all and no-one can teach them what they already know (!) it’s so boring and if you want to know the actual truth, what they’re assuming is incorrect. Americans of today are NOT super enthusiastic optimistic and more likely to succeed because of genetics Yes they’re more likely to try… but not because they are the descendants of Europeans crazy enough, desperate enough or persecuted enough to have made the journey to the new world. It has nothing to do with that whatsoever. Genetics and what we inherit do affect our immediate descendants but evolution means the species is always covering all bases to ensure the best survival. Once upon a time there were no people with blue eyes - a genetic mutation means there now are. If you put a million of the most cynical depressive suicidal people you could find on a remote self sustaining island and revisited it thousands of years later the community that you’d find would be no more depressive or suicidal than any relatively healthy community you find today. These two know-fuck-alls seem to have forgotten Half of Americas society was kidnapped and forced to America in slave ships against their will where they were forced to have sex with people they wouldn’t have chosen themselves given half the chance - they were bred like livestock and then worked miserable unhappy lives until death. Yet the modern black American descendants of those slaves are to a certain extent part of the American dream even they are more likely to me more “can do” than the modern Brit of any colour - lesser so than their white countrymen but that’s because of unconscious racism of others not their own lack of genetic optimism. The British empire didn’t reach its zenith until long after the American revolutionary war. We didn’t leave all our optimistic people in the USA and even if we did by now we still would have replenished enough optimistically minded people for it not to matter. But even after the First World War britains empire was the biggest it had ever been and so whilst we accepted we were no longer absolute top dog - we took a happy second place throughout the 1920s and 30s. The common man was gaining power and living standards were rising so there was still optimism in the air. And being British still meant something - Americas middle class still aspired to ape Britishness even though America was now richer than Britain - Yale and harvards 1920s architecture looks 16th century English for a reason. Even in the movies the biggest actors in Hollywood until the 1940s all had a transatlantic accent which today sounds almost like a british accent. It wasn’t until after helping britain win a Second World War that america finally aspired to be amercan and that’s why the 1950s was an explosion of American pop culture instead of aping the old countries of Europe Americans believed that America was best. They beat the soviets with the A bomb and were on their way to the moon. britain never regained its god given confidence that it was the best at everything but that was okay because living standards were still rising, people had a job for life and after the Second World War bombings and food rations it was impossible to feel bad about the ever shrinking empire. And the optimism of the 1960s was a reflection of the idea that britain was realising it didn’t need the empire and it had been more trouble than it was worth. The pound in the pocket was all that mattered and that optimism was reflected in the music the architecture and the fashion. Then came the seventies, strikes and company collapses, punk and the loss of control by the upper classes the working class no longer bowed unquestionably to the establishment and it felt like the last days of Rome, Then came Margret thatcher and winning the Falklands war. Although divisive and the author of some terrible economic decisions for Britain she did stop the feeling of imploding decline that had gripped the uk in the 70s By the 97 election labour inherited a country that was economically growing faster than ever before and optimism was the highest it had been since the 60s But they devolved Scotland and wales arrogantly believing that would keep labour in power in Scotland and wales no matter who was on power in England - now we have a disunited kingdom of countries in competition with each other instead of considering each other as equals of the same realm. Tony Blair will be the cause of the uk splitting up - the government should never have been devolved because it changed the psyche from “us” to “them and us” and Scottish English relaxations are at an all time low. The British empire was once a thing to be proud of and now even Scotland wants to pretend it was a victim of the empire instead of the right hand man co parent of empire that it was. America in the 80s was optimistic and convinced of its superiority in all things - today it’s very different and even for a Brit who has come from Britain that has eaten humble pie ever since the end of world war 2 - travelling to America today feels like going backwards in time to a less enlightened place. Todays America is showing superpower fatigue - it’s more or less at the point britain was just after the First World War - but america is less vulnerable than britain was because britain lost its empire - America doesn’t have an empire so as long as there isn’t another civil war - which is possible but unlikely - America should be able to keep China from claiming the top spot - you just need to sort your damn education out - too many Americans know all the names of the kardashian family yet can’t list what two countries boarders their own or who they won independence from - there’s NO excuse for this kind of moronic ignorance. Britain is no longer a superpower but even in the worst schools in the country you wouldn’t find pupils who were as ignorant as too many Americans are. It’s Americas self obsession and whilst America watches tv Communist China is working hard to catch you up.

Not British or American, but I don't think British people don't have pride in being British, they're just not quite as sickeningly obnoxious about it as Americans, and some other countries. Also, I think you also have to account for the four individuals countries of the UK, which I guess for some may impact on their pride in being British or part of the UK, as they may feel English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish first. Just 2 cents from an outside observer.

The idea that Brits don't have much British pride is interesting, because there are some of us who definitely do have that pride. But as they pointed out, British Pride in this country has become synonymous with racism. Which is absolute Bullshit. But it is the perception. And I don't even think it's a majority of Brits who see it as racist, it's a very vocal minority. But the majority hide their pride because they don't want to be labelled a racist. And you know what, it's happening to you America. Trump is the man of American Pride. Make America Great Again he says. And a HUGE number of Americans say, that man is a racist. And in America, it is the minority of very vocal American hating liberals who are making everyday Americans ashamed to be American. Because to love America is to be on the side of Trump and that makes you a racist. I don't care what anyone reading this may think about Trump. Hate him, loathe him. I don't care, keep it to yourself. But you cannot deny that there is a level of hatred towards him that borders the obscene. I've seen videos of Liberal Americans ranking Trump as more evil than Hitler, Stalin, Mao and the Devil. The level of hatred towards Trump and the growing belief that to love America is to love wearing KKK outfits is ridiculous. And it happens in the UK too as proud Englishmen are treated as if they are Holocaust denying, Islamaphobic, neo nazi scum. It's been that way for decades. And America will see that trend growing too if you don't stop the division and the self hatred soon.

This was a really interesting video! I think a lot of their ideas were really insightful and I liked some of the analogies. I think the descriptions were spot on in terms of comparison, but their interpretations of each comparison was filtered through their own personal values and aspirations- I guess anyones would be. Personally I don’t value or aspire to be an entrepreneur, and I don’t think that’s because being british has made me too pessimistic. Our options in life aren’t to either be an entrepreneur or to be an unmotivated underachiever. People work as hard and as enthusiastically and as creatively at many things that don’t involve being an entrepreneur, and as a result will enjoy and value their lives just as much. I don’t mind that this video was framed this way because it’s nice to hear such a specific perspective, and I did find a lot of truth in their comparisons. And maybe there is something about being British that makes people less likely to pursue being an entrepreneur- but whatever it is also seems to make them more likely to pursue music, art, science, career goals, and hobbies that don’t make money. It would’ve been interesting to hear their thoughts about that. I guess it’s how America came to produce Steve Jobs, an entrepreneur who focused on technology. And how Britain produced Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist who invented the Internet, but probably wouldn’t be described as an entrepreneur.
